    Drawing Expressive Words

    One Day March 13 (Fri.)

This workshop is based on a series of word doodles that I played with some time ago. This will start from drawing playful word sketches in simple line form. These words will be designed to exaggerate the interplay of line and form beyond what you might be able to achieve with direct brush lettering. Once satisfied, we will sketch out the thicks & thins based on either pressure sensitive marks or brush marks. We will look closely at how those starts, stops, and weight gradations relate to a lettering tool and hand movement. This workshop is designed more on creativity than hand skill.

    Expressive Brush

    1ó Days March 14–15 (Sat-Sun)

Pointed brush is considered an elusive writing tool taking years to develop a solid style. In this class we will take a less mechanical approach avoiding the traditional ductus altogether. Instead we will concentrate on developing a repertoire of strokes and movements that work in harmony. Using a series of mark making exercises we will develop studies that we will analyze and combine to form words with an emphasis on rhythm. Handwriting will play a stronger role than traditional calligraphy. We will also experiment with weight, structure, speed, and other possibilities. Students will be guided to develop their own personal style of choice regardless of skill level.

    Traditional Brush

    Half Day March 15 (Sun.)

The most common pointed brush lettering styles use letters constructed of individual strokes following a more or less traditional calligraphic model. In this workshop we will work on the core elements of brush lettering. The degree of pressure and use of the side vs point of the brush will determine the profile of each stroke. Using a series of exercises, participants will gain better control and a better understanding of how to use these key elements.

    Retro Deco

    9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Roth Family Jewish Community Center - Maitland, FL

Taking a look back on the lettering samplers of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements of the late 1800's and early 1900's and creating not only painted colored pieces and in designs like Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret McDonald and American Dard Haunter we will look further back to the Wiener Werkstätte secession movement. We will work with line drawn pen and ink work with substantial painted modernism.
