    Neuland and Folded Pen Adventures

    With Carol DuBosch

9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. all days, Roth Family Jewish Community Center - Maitland, FL

This husky typeface designed by German Calligrapher Rudolph Koch in the 1920's. Contemporary lettering artists use these capital letters in a wide variety of interesting ways to create broadsides, posters, cards or books. This class will explore NEULAND letters in two forms. First, the typeface letters will be drawn, cut, embossed, layered, and outlined. With the understanding of the letter shapes that is gained by drawing, we will move on to work with a variation of NEULAND to be written with a broad edged pen and balsa pens we make in class.  All levels of experience are welcome.

The Folded Pen is an exciting and expressive tool for calligraphers to explore. The class will begin with the basic strokes that the folded pen makes and take these basic strokes to make a lively script that can be adapted to each student’s personal rhythm. The Folded Pen script has a unique contemporary feel and has a similar look to brush writing but is easier to learn. The class will look at the many variations of Folded Pen Script and explore possibilities of color-blending with inks and watercolors. No experience needed.

    Drawing Expressive Words,

    Expressive and Traditional Brush Lettering

    March 27-29, 2020
    With Stephen Rapp

    9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Roth Family Jewish Community Center - Maitland, FL

The words will be designed to exaggerate the interplay of line and form beyond what you might be able to achieve with direct brush lettering. Once satisfied, we will sketch out the thicks & thins based on either pressure sensitive marks or brush marks.

The pointed brush is considered an elusive writing tool and can take years to develop a solid style. In this class we will take a less mechanical approach avoiding the traditional ductus altogether. Instead we will concentrate on developing a repertoire of strokes and movements that work in harmony. We will look closely at how those starts. stops, and weight gradations relate to a lettering tool and hand movement. This workshop is designed more on creativity than hand skill.
